Avaaz is a civic organization based in the United States that is established in the year of 2007. The organization works in the area of promoting global activism on various issues, such as poverty, education, human rights, animal rights, climate change, global security, terrorism, and more. As per “The Guardian,” Avaaz is the world’s most powerful and influential network of online activists. The name Avaaz was chosen for the organization as it means “Voice” in the Persian language and has similar words in many different global languages.
Avaaz.org is a group that was co-founded by a social welfare community named Res Publica that consists of professionals who are looking to promote good governance and deliberative democracy. Other co-founders of Avaaz.org include MoveOn.org and Service Employees International Union. The individuals who are responsible for founding Avaaz and how successful it has become over the years includes Ricken Patel, Eli Pariser, David Madden, Tom Pravda, Tom Perriello, Jeremy Heimans, and Andrea Woodhouse. Presently, Ricken Patel serves as the President of Avaaz, and Eli Pariser is the chairman of the board. Tom Pravda serves the role of secretary, and Ben Brandzel is the treasurer.
Even though the organization started in the year 2007, Avaaz.org stopped taking donations of over 5,000 GBP and refused to take donations from organizations or corporations. The primary source of the organization’s funds is individual contributors. Avaaz has been able to collect the funds close to 20 Million GBP so far. In the initial period, many other foundations came together to help Avaaz financially and pay for its startup costs. The aim of Avaaz.org is to unite the idealists from across the globe to raise the voice against the atrocities and anything that harms the present and future of the world. The organization aims to make the world a better place to live in and ensure people enjoy their social and constitutional rights freely.
