Robert Ivy: This Century’s Architectural Pioneer

Since 2011, Robert Ivy has been the CEO and Executive Vice President of the prestigious American Institute of Architects. Ivy holds a Masters of Architecture Degree from Tulane University, along with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from The University of the South: Sewanee. His education and career accomplishments in the field of architecture are astounding.

Ivy had been the Editor in Chief of the world renowned Architectural Record since 1996. Robert Ivy is usually credited with the explosive growth of this popular architectural journal. He became both the Vice President and the Editorial Director the the famed Mcgraw-Hill Construction Media. This company includes the highly-regarded Magazine of Sustainable Design: GreenSource, China, SNAP, HQ Magazine and the Architectural Record.

Ivy was honored to be a juror on a panel that ultimately named architect Frank Gehry the choice to build The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial. Robert Ivy served as president of Dean/Ivy and Dean/Dale in the years 1981 to 1996. During this time, Ivy worked as a critic for a number of nationally read publications.

The Architectural Journal received several coveted publishing awards while Ivy was Editor in Chief. This included the National Magazine Award for General Excellence, a rare feat for a professional magazine to accomplish. This journal also won 7 Ozzie awards, 26 Jessie H. Neal Awards and in 2008, the magazine took home the MPA Digital Award for its website that year. Ivy holds numerous personal awards, including the Crain Award. He has been recognized for his superior management skills and was named a “Master Architect” by the National Architect Fraternity: Alpha Rho Chi. The fraternity was impressed with how effectively Robert Ivy was in his ability to communicate the monumental value of design. This high award has only been given to seven architects since the fraternity was founded 100 years ago. Ivy is the only architect given this award in this century.

Robert Ivy has a published biography of Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentice. Written in 2001, Ivy’s book, “Fay Jones: Architect,” is in its third edition. Ivy was born in Columbus, Mississippi and he currently lives in Washington, DC. Ivy remains the EVP/CEO of the American Institute of Architects. Robert Ivy has been a leader in the architectural world for decades. Robert Ivy continues to influence architectural visions. Today’s architects owe thanks to Ivy for putting architecture in the media spotlight.
