It has been two years since the release of the Chainsmoker’s hit single, “Closer”. The collaborative effort between Alex Pall, Andrew Taggart, and then up-and-comer Halsey was easily their biggest hit of that year. For the artists 2016 was a springboard for many things, for the single it was the first wave of sales. “Closer” did well stateside and abroad and its success did not stop in 2016. Two years later the single is still selling, and those sales have reached 10 million units. This means “Closer” is now certified diamond for the United States. This is a huge accomplishment for the entertainers, and a solid reminder that they are all still relatively new.

The dynamic duo of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall formed the Chainsmokers back in 2012. The duet did not find mainstream success until a few years later with “#Selfie”. The single was their breakout and it premiered in 2014. So, although it may feel like the Chainsmokers have been around a while, their mainstream presence has only existed for four years. They climbed to the top 10 in 2015 with “Roses,” and have frequented the spot since then. They identify as EDM artists but operate more like pop stars. Taggart himself covers lead vocals for a wide number of their songs. Most EDM artists do not do that. “Closer” was a turning point for the group that established as solid artists rather than dance-hall DJ’s. It also framed their barrier breaking work as songwriters and performers. The single was also a big deal for Halsey as it was her first top-charting single. It also formed her breakout as a serious artist.
The three artists informed their adoring fans via Instagram, with photos of themselves holding their plaques. Diamond certification is a very sought-after thing in the music world. To attain it within the first five years of your mainstream existence says a lot. The big plaques were provided by RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America. They contain the cover art for the single, a list of its various accomplishments, and ten platinum plated LPs representing each million units sold.
